Fluid Resuscitation


As well as being used for ‘maintenance’ (usually crystalloids), and for their physiological effects (usually colloids), fluids may also be used in urgent or emergency situations to resuscitate patients.

There are two main ways in which resuscitation fluids are used:


1. To maintain intravascular volume (in order to maintain blood pressure in hypotensive or shocked patients)


2. To replace massive fluid losses
