Fluid Balance

‘Fluid balance’ describes the concept of homeostasis of water in the body. It is dependent on:

1.The amount of water coming into the body

2.The amount of water leaving the body

There are a number of ways in which water can enter and leave the body. For example, drinking fluids increases the amount of water in the body, urination decreases the amount of water in the body.

How much water is lost and gained by these different mechanisms is dependent on a number of factors, including age, gender, environmental factors (eg external temperature) and different disease states.
