Types of Fluid

 

All intravenous fluids can be thought of as containing two major components – water and ‘the rest’. It is the composition of ‘the rest’ which allows us to classify fluids, and lends the various groups of fluids their different properties.  It is these properties which leads clinicians to opt to use one fluid rather than another in any given situation.

 

Fluids can be broadly classified into two types.

 

1.Crystalloid

2.Colloid
