Module 2 : Clinical Assessment

Weighing the patient

Daily patient weighing is particularly useful for patients who are prone to retaining fluid i.e. renal and heart failure, as this allows easy monitoring of changes in fluid balance.

Since water has a density of 1g/ml, a 1kg weight loss equates to a water loss of 1 litre. Therefore a 24hr change in weight is a good indicator of an equivalent change in body fluid. This is especially helpfulĀ  to guide diuretic dosing.
